MMA Top 10 Women's Pound-for-Pound

Not necessarily. The Strikeforce women were invited to the UFC's recent fighter summit in Las Vegas, which indicates that Zuffa thinks women have a future within the company, and next month's return of the sport's biggest female star, Gina Carano, will result in a publicity boost for women's MMA.
So as I review the top 10 female fighters in mixed martial arts, I'm confident that it's a list of fighters whose futures are bright. Even if I'm not sure where and when most of them will fight next.

Manny Pacquiao Dominates Shane Mosley

Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but in reality Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him, and the referee made a mistake in calling it a knockdown. In reality, Mosley never had Pacquiao in any trouble, at any point in the fight.
All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

Nick Diaz to face world champion BJJ player Braulio Estima in grappling superbout
Nick Diaz has never been submitted in an MMA bout. While that streak may be safe as he sits out a suspension from the Nevada Athletic Commission for testing positive for a banned substance after his loss to Carlos Condit, his BJJ will be tested soon. Diaz will participate in a bout with Braulio Estima. (Since it's not an MMA bout, he doesn't need a license so he's not violating the suspension.)
Estima is a highly-credentialed blackbelt in jiu-jitsu. He has won a world championship and numerous titles in BJJ and has two gold medals and a silver from the respected Abu Dhabi grappling tournament. In other words, he's one of the best around at groundwork.
Diaz and Estima will not wear gis (the traditional garment for BJJ) in their bout, making it more like an MMA bout. Diaz has eight wins by submission, but few opponents have the grappling skill of Estima. Will Diaz be able to win this bout? Tell us in the comments, on Twitter or on Facebook.

Gus Johnson: Any MMA Fighter Would Kill Pacquiao In the Cage

Fighting in front of a large home crowd during the UFC's first event in Sweden, Alexander Gustafsson gave the Swedes just what they wanted. He picked apart Thiago Silva on the way to a unanimous decision win at UFC on Fuel 2 on Saturday.

Rashad Evans vs. Jon Jones walkout shirts end in a draw
Rashad Evans and Jon Jones have spent a whole lot of time doing interviews, training, filming "Primetime," and doing public appearances heading into UFC 145. They have been busy, so they must not have had much time to spend on their walkout shirts.
If their shirts serve as a predictor of what Saturday night's bout will be like, we are in for a major letdown. Evans' Jaco shirt and Jones' shirt from the UFC are basic and don't even feature the fighter's names. Jones is made of moisture-wicking fabric, so it costs a bit more at $44.95. Evans' shirt features environmentally-friendly ink and costs $19.95.

Bellator Adds Alexis Vila to Bantamweight Division
As it continues to carve out a niche for itself as the No. 2 promotion in mixed martial arts, Bellator has once again signed a fighter who's big on talent and capable of bringing a great deal of excitement into the cage in former Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Alexis Vila.
Before we get into all the reasons Vila is an exciting addition to Bellator's bantamweight tournament, let's get the two big problems out of the way ...
1. He's old: He turned 40 in March.
2. He's tiny: In the Olympics he wrestled at 105 pounds and most recently fought in MMA at 125 pounds.

Fire & Brimstone: Backcountry Tow-Ats
Fifteen pounds of rubber, rope and a wakeboard handle; the new addition to my backcountry gear set-up for the new winter season – this is what happens when you try and circumvent the conventional in today’s snowboard industry. Not that I don’t mind lugging around 60+ pounds of weight on my back every time I step out to snowboard, but things are starting to get a bit out of the control when you find yourself hiking miles into untamed wilderness with a Banshee Bungee on your back. With the creative minds of most riders in our sport, you think we could come up with better ideas than flipping 3 times in the air, ski aerialists style and using motor winches to get loads of speed, jumping from building to building. I’m pretty sure I just watched an action movie where actors in leotards were doing these stunts; only they had fiery explosions behind them. I guess though, this could be seen as the price for progression today.
Regardless of the absurd, I still like to do things different on my snowboard from year to year, so I decided to lug a bungee into the backcountry zones where my crew has kept running into problems with speed and flat run-ins, for features that we have been dying to hit for seasons. We finally found a solution though and it’s really simple and quite easy to accomplish with a lot of snow - we are calling it the Backcountry Bungee, so listen up and pay attention if you want to set some new trends.
Just wrap the bungee around an extra board, if you happen to have one lying around and bury it – much like how a boat anchor works. With one end of the bungee securely tied and hunkered down with the board anchor underneath heaps of snow, use as you normally would in any urban setting. Just remember to zip up that jacket, cause this is no city environment. We are talking flat run-ins with deep snow. So the next time your out in the danger zone, keep the bungee in mind. Thanks to this new contraption, with a little effort…or a lot depending on where you are venturing off to, you can now join the new movement of progression; spandex jump suit and fuel-injected motor - sold separately.

Reader Rants: Mo Lawal?s dismissal, the Anderson Silva/Chael Sonnen rematch, and an overweight fighter
Welcome to another edition of Reader Rants, where Cagereaders get their say. This week, though we're still in a Zuffa drought, you all had plenty of opinions to share.
On King Mo's release from Strikeforce after calling a commissioner a bad name on Twitter:
It was kind of ignorant for her to ask him if he knew how to read or write. Instead of being "funny" or "racist" she could have just plainly asked him if he read through the application----in particular the part with the question of taking different meds/steroids/drugs. -- David Feinblatt
He should have not lost his job. There have been a lot of worse things said on Twitter by Dana White and other UFC fighters. He'll get his job back. -- Angel D. Gutierrez-Ruiz
Nothing was commented on more than the Anderson Silva/Chael Sonnen rematch:
I believe the rematch will allow Sonnen to back up what he said about the first fight. Win it and give Silva the beating hes never experienced in the cage before. -- Larry Conley
I think just because of what happened in the last fight, Silva is coming very prepared. I don't see him losing any fight anytime soon. At least not to someone that he almost lost to in the past. Best believe is going be a war but Silva will be victorious. -- Ernesto Aguilera
I think Silva will win based on a couple of different reasons:
1. Silva was injured last time he fought Sonnen and probably should not have been fighting at all yet he still won after getting hammered for 4 rounds
2. Sonnen was on performance enhancing drugs (which got him banned from fighting for a year)
3. Silva has beaten down some of the best ground and pound guys in the world, some of whom Sonnen can't hold a candle to.
4. Silva has the best record in the UFC, which is not something that just happens... its earned through hard work and extreme talent
In the end, anything can happen in MMA. A slip, a swollen eye, even cutting weight all takes its toll. If I had to bet though, I would put my money on Anderson Silva. -- David Fish
Thiago Santos coming in 12 lbs. overweight for his Bellator title fight lost him a chance to win the tournament. What did readers think?
That's the right call. I initially read that the whole tournament was going to be scrapped. I'm glad that they didn't mess over Prindle because Santos couldn't make weight. Besides, he wasn't even close to making weight. -- Michael Stull
Guess that extra week wait was spent at the buffet. -- Jim Hammar

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Aldo on Top, Mendes No. 2

The fight I think the UFC really wants to make for Aldo is against Kenny Florian, who has more name recognition than anyone else on the UFC's featherweight roster. If Florian wins his featherweight debut against Diego Nunes at UFC 131, he'll instantly step into title contention -- and into the featherweight Top 10.
But for now, the No. 1 featherweight appears headed toward an August showdown with the undefeated Chad Mendes -- and on my featherweight rankings, that's the right call.

Knockout of the week: Michael McDonald takes out Alex Soto
The good news for Miguel Torres? At UFC 145, he will have his first fight since getting cut, then rehired by the UFC. The bad news? It's against Michael McDonald, a bantamweight barely old enough to buy beer in the U.S. McDonald is on a seven-bout winning streak, and in his last fight, he did this:
Torres is one of the most experienced bantamweights in the UFC. At 31, he has 44 fights under his belt. The former WEC champ is 2-1 in the UFC, with the loss coming in a tight decision to Demetrious Johnson.
McDonald is a tough up-and-comer, while Torres is an established power at 135 lbs. Who will take this fight? Speak your mind in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Eduardo Dantas leads off this week's edition of Weekend Warriors, your Monday morning look at the weekend's MMA. "Dudu" was the star of Bellator's show on Friday, choking Zach Makovsky unconscious in the second round of their title bout. With that win, Dantas became the new Bellator bantamweight champ and one of the hottest lighter weight prospects in MMA.
Marcos Galvao and Luis Nogueira both won their bantamweight semifinal tournament matches with unanimous decisions as they vie for the chance to face off with Dantas. In the featherweight tournament, an emotional Daniel Straus pummeled Mike Corey on the way to a unanimous decision win to earn a spot in the tourney final. Straus' training partner was killed in a car accident just a week ago. Staus will face Marlon Sandro for the featherweight tournament championship on May 11.
Gustafsson impresses in Sweden at UFC on Fuel 2
Alexander Gustafsson cemented his role as a top contender in the light heavyweight division with a convincing decision over Thiago Silva on Saturday. Brian Stann got back to his winning ways with a gentlemanly knockout of Alessio Sakara, and Dennis Siver got his first win at featherweight with a decision over Diego Nunes.
In his UFC debut Siyar Bahadurzada took home a $50,000 Knockout of the Night bonus for his 42-second KO of Paulo Thiago. John Maguire earned a Submission of the Night bonus for his armbar of Damarques Johnson. Brad Pickett and Damacio Page were given Fight of the Night honors for the back-and-forth battle that ended with Pickett finishing Page with a second-round rear naked choke.

Pacquiao vs. Mosley: Why MMA Fans Should Care

1. It's the biggest combat sports event of the year.
For as much as the UFC has gained on -- and in some respects surpassed -- the popularity of boxing, the biggest fights in boxing still exceed the biggest fights in the UFC in terms of pay-per-view buys and worldwide media attention. Although the MGM Grand in Las Vegas obviously won't attract nearly as many fans as the 55,000 who came out to see Georges St. Pierre in Toronto, Pacquiao vs. Mosley will surely get more pay-per-view buys in the United States, far more mainstream media attention and far more attention globally, as Pacquiao is a draw throughout Asia and the single biggest celebrity in the Philippines, a country of nearly 100 million people. This is a major worldwide sporting event.

Brian Stann knocks out Alessio Sakara, then stops fight without help from referee (VIDEO)
UFC middleweight Brian Stann is a fighter, a Marine, and recently, a commentator for Fox. He's used to wearing many hats, so it's no surprise that during his UFC on Fuel 2 win over Alessio Sakara, he was both fighter and referee.
Stann knocked Sakara down with a bevy of knees in the first round. While in Sakara's guard, Stann knocked his opponent out with short elbows. When he saw Sakara was clearly out, he pulled back, waving to referee Marc Goddard that Sakara was knocked out.
Though MMA rules indicate Stann would not have been wrong to continue the bout until Goddard stepped in, he didn't want to inflict any more damage on Sakara.
Immediately after the bout, UFC president Dana White tweeted, "Brian Stann is one of the classiest people on Earth!" Light heavyweight champ Jon Jones, a training partner of Stann's, called the win "very classy" and "good for the sport."
Stann is already known as one of MMA's good guys. He started fighting after a decorated career with the Marines. He founded Hire Heroes, a not-for-profit whose aim is to help veterans transition to civilian jobs. Just before he was scheduled to leave his Atlanta home to train for the Sakara fight in New Mexico, his brother-in-law died. Instead of leaving his grieving wife, Stann trained at home and communicated with his coaches through videos.
As Ben Fowlkes from MMA Fighting wrote, he's such a good guy, you almost want to hate him. Except, he's also the kind of good guy who will stop a fight when he sees his opponent has been knocked out.
