United displaying killer instinct in Charleston

Greeted with everything from guttural yells to wacky dances, finishing is the most difficult thing to do in soccer.  During Wednesday night's 3-1 win over the Charleston Battery, D.C. United did it as well as they have at any time in recent memory.

A trio of tallies, coming from three different forwards on just five shots, showed off the depth and efficiency of the Black-and-Red's new-look front line.

Improved communication sparks United win

Depth has been one of the key talking points of D.C. United's 2012 preseason, and during Saturday night's 1-0 win over Chicago in the Carolina Challenge Cup, it was on full display.  After an opening 45 minutes that saw the Black-and-Red pinned in their own end, a pair of substitutes made the difference in United's much-improved second half performance.

Emiliano Dudar and Ethan White came on to start the final period and immediately injected a sense of calm to a D.C. defense that had been exposed by the pace of Chicago forwards Patrick Nyarko and Dominic Oduro.

Three Stars: Hatsu Hioki, Anthony Pettis and Mark Hunt

UFC 144 brought the promotion back to Japan with a top-to-bottom exciting card, complete with a tight, five-round thriller between new champion Benson Henderson and Frankie Edgar in the main event. Who stood out?

No. 1 star -- Hatsu Hioki: After debuting in the UFC with a split-decision win over George Roop, Hioki fulfilled his promise as one of the world's best featherweights with a three-round beatdown of Bart Palaszewski. Though his stand-up needs work, he's the best current featherweight challenger out there for Jose Aldo's belt.

[ Related: Kevin Iole's UFC 144 breakdown ]

No. 2 star -- Anthony Pettis: Though Pettis' title shot was spoiled by Clay Guida, he kicked his way back into title contention on Saturday with a knockout of Joe Lauzon. He won a $65,000 Knockout of the Night bonus, and a possible rematch with Henderson.

No. 3 star -- Mark Hunt: Between 2006 and 2010, Hunt suffered six straight MMA losses. It was not a reach to think he wasn't going to be in the UFC's heavyweight division much longer. Things changed in 2011, as he took out Chris Tuchscherer, Ben Rothwell and now Cheick Kongo. One thing is clear: the 37-year-old fighter from New Zealand is not done yet.

Watch Georges St. Pierre get beaten by Japanese children in the cutest video ever produced

UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre headed to Japan for UFC 144. He visited a school for young kids and was promptly beaten by children wielding swords.

Seriously, watch the first two and a half minutes of this video. Your day will improve. Watch as GSP beams while the children warm up, then see him not keep up as they run through exercises with plastic swords. Finally, see how they suddenly turn on him and beat GSP over the head until he submits to strikes.

After he talks about how he would have rather played with swords as a kid than with a hockey stick, they show a visit to the mayor of Saitama, Japan, and a visit to a dojo where kids aged around seven beat each other up. But if you can't watch the whole six minutes, at least press play for the first two and half.

Report: Bellator heavyweight fighting for life

Bellator heavyweight Blagoi Ivanov is reportedly on artificial life support after being stabbed in Sofia, Bulgaria over the weekend. Reports say he was attacked by a group of men with bats. Bellator doesn't have all of the details from the incident yet, but they are asking for prayers. From MMA Junkie:

"Right now, we do not have all of the details, but our thoughts and prayers are with Blagoi and his family," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said.

Ivanov beat Zak Jensen and William Penn in 2011 Bellator bouts that earned him a shot in their heavyweight tournament, but he had to withdraw due to an injury. His most recent fight was a TKO of Ricco Rodriguez on Christmas Eve.

Manny Pacquiao Dominates Shane Mosley

by Michael David SmithManny Pacquiao defeated Shane Mosley via a unanimous decision in Las Vegas.Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he's the biggest attraction in boxing, dominating Shane Mosley on Saturday night to win a one-sided unanimous decision in the biggest fight of the year.

Although Mosley came out fighting hard with a good first round, it was all Pacquiao from there on. Pacquiao knocked Mosley down in the third and dominated the fight throughout. Technically Mosley knocked Pacquiao down in the 10th round, but in reality Pacquiao fell when Mosley tripped him, and the referee made a mistake in calling it a knockdown. In reality, Mosley never had Pacquiao in any trouble, at any point in the fight.

All three judges awarded it to Pacquiao by lopsided scores: 119-108, 120-108 and 120-107. According to the pay-per-view broadcast, Pacquiao landed exactly 100 more punches than Mosley did (182 to 82) and threw more than twice as many punches (552 to 260).

Octagon, but no fighters, in Japanese ad for UFC 144

In the United States, we're used to seeing UFC pay-per-view ads that heavily feature the fighters on the card. Even when they break from the fight-highlight-norm-with-voiceover-and-music, like with the UFC 129 commercial featuring Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields, the advertising still revolves around the fighters.

With the ad airing in Japan before this weekend's UFC 144 bout, the ad features the shadow of an octagon and the voice of cage announcer Bruce Buffer.

No Frankie Edgar or Benson Henderson to represent the main event, not even the more familiar Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Would that be enough to get you to tune in? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Thanks, Bloody Elbow.

Dana White talks after UFC 137 "I Will Never Trust Nick Diaz Again" - Dana White

Nick Diaz was a no-show at the UFC 137 press conference in Las Vegas - just like he was a no-show at the press conference in Toronto the day before. Georges Lucas? daughter wins, celebrates with Darth Vader and some Stormtroopers

Amanda Lucas, the daughter of "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, won again in Japan this weekend. She beat up on Yumiko Hotta for two and a half rounds before submitting her with a keylock. With that win, she claimed the DEEP open-weight women's championship and improved her record to 4-1.

A record like that proves the force is strong with her. Darth Vader approved, and even showed up to celebrate. Skip to the 15-minute mark to see Lucas finish Hotta, and like he did in Cloud City, Vader just appears. At the 20-minute mark, he gives his clenched fist of approval, and then poses like a proud papa with Lucas in the final minute of the video.

Lucas had three straight submission wins in DEEP. She trains at Cesar Gracie Academy, the home of Nick and Nate Diaz and Jake Shields, as well as with Gilbert Melendez's Skrap Pack. Perhaps Vader can stop by at Cesar Gracie's and teach the no-hands, force-choke that served him so well as he ruled the galaxy.

Fukuda, Cariaso and Tamura start UFC 144 with wins

In the UFC's first trip to Japan since Zuffa bought the promotion, Riki Fukuda, Chris Cariaso and Issei Tamura were early winners at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Fukuda beats up Cantwell

Riki Fukuda dominated Steve Cantwell on the way to a 29-28, 30-27, 30-27 decision.

Fukuda got a takedown quickly in the first round and started throwing several big punches and elbows. Cantwell tried to grab an arm for a submission, but he couldn't do it. He finally returned to his feet to come on late in the round with kicks and a flying knee. In the second round. Cantwell defended a Fukuda takedown with a tight guillotine. As hard as Cantwell squeezed, Fukuda was still able to get out.

Fukuda took advantage of Cantwell's tiredness and landed several strike combinations. In the last 30 seconds of the round, Cantwell got a takedown and jumped on Fukuda's back. He fell off just before the horn sounded to end the round.

"My plan was to take him down more, but he had a very strong base. I was in a car accident the last time so I had to take a break, but it was worth the wait and I would like to thank the UFC for giving me this opportunity," Fukuda said.

Cantwell again tried for a submission in the third round, but Fukuda came on late in the round to beat up Cantwell. An exhausted Cantwell tried to return strikes, but it was all Fukuda.

Cariaso takes close decision

Chris Cariaso took a tight decision over Takeya Mizugaki, winning 29-28 on all three judges' cards. Mizugaki dominated the first round with better striking, a takedown and submission defense. He fended off an omoplata attempt by Cariaso. Mizugaki returned to the clinch in the second round to fend off Cariaso's strikes. Mizugaki finally completed the takedown around the two-minute mark, but Cariaso stayed active on the bottom.

In the third round, Cariaso threw a high kick then slipped. Mizugaki took advantage of the fall and used it to control Cariaso on the ground. He was more active on top this time, trying to pass the guard, but it wasn't enough.

Tamura starts card with knockout

Issei Tamura made a memorable UFC debut, knocking out Tiequan Zhang in the first fight on the card.

In the first minute, each fighter took a turn knocking the other down before settling in for a grapple-heavy first round. The second round didn't last long, as Tamura landed a picture-perfect right hand and knocked Zhang right out. The fight was stopped at 0:32 in the second round.

Machida, Jackson or wait: What to do with Dan Henderson?

Dan Henderson appears to be a man with a world of options. Comfortable at both light heavyweight and middleweight, his winning streak and credentials in both Strikeforce and the UFC qualify him for a title shot. After his epic bout with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, Henderson said he wanted to try for a title at whatever weight is first.

[Related: Y! Sports pound-for-pound rankings]

Unfortunately for Henderson, the light heavyweight belt will be contested in April, and the middleweight belt is up for grabs in June. He is involved in neither fight. The UFC's solution was to offer him Lyoto Machida, a former champ who most recently lost to Jon Jones in December.

"He doesn't want to fight Machida," [UFC president Dana] White said following Wednesday's UFC on FUEL event. "He doesn't want to wait. He's going to have to wait. Who does he want to fight? I don't know what to do with Dan. Dan's either going to have to wait for Jones or wait for Silva. Or fight somebody else."

Except, Henderson says he was never offered that bout. Via his Twitter account, Henderson disputed White's words.

Was never offered Machida. And even though he has lost 3 out of his last 4, I'm sure it would be entertaining.

Who to believe between the two? Though, as Henderson says, a bout with Machida could be interesting for fans to watch, it doesn't make any sense for Henderson. Dating back to when he held the belt, Machida has losses to Rua, Jones, and Quinton Jackson. His one win was over a retiring Randy Couture.

[Video: Watch Jon Jones get attacked by a police dog]

A win over Machida would get Henderson no closer to the title shot. MMA Fighting's Mike Chiappetta suggests that Henderson takes on the winner of next week's bout between Ryan Bader and Jackson. Though a win over Jackson would avenge a loss on Henderson's record, it could also jeopardize a chance to win a belt off Silva or Jones.

As much as it pains Henderson to sit idle, his best bet is to wait. What would you do in Henderson's shoes? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

When Benson Henderson walked out of the cage after winning the UFC lightweight title, he walked right past security and the UFC staff who was directing him towards the locker room. He had to go celebrate with the woman who has supported him throughout his career: his mom.

In a sweet moment, Henderson hugged his mother. She pulled back and grabbed at his belt, bursting with pride over her son's accomplishment. Henderson provided another great performance in beating Frankie Edgar, but didn't forget to say thank you to his mom.

He admitted that he did hear her cheering during his fight.

""My mom has a pretty distinct voice. I can hear her everywhere," Henderson said.

What to look for: UFC on Fuel TV 1

The UFC rolls out its first major card debut tonight on Fuel TV in Omaha, Ne. Jake Ellenberger has a chance to work his way into the welterweight title mix with a big win over Diego Sanchez, but the card features much more beyond the main event (Fuel TV 8 p.m. ET).

The heavyweights are definitely can't miss this evening. Stefan Struve faces the division's great anamoly in Dave Herman. A chiseled 235 pounder Herman seems to fight with little strategy, but he is dangerous. He's mocked jiu-jitsu in the past. He'd better take it seriously against Struve, who has 15 submission wins in his 21 victories.

The other thing to watch for with Herman is what sort of look he brings to the Octagon tonight. Yesterday, he looked like a Russian lumberjack.

Ellenberger returns home

Sanchez will be walking into a road spot against Omaha's Ellenberger. The city is fired up for the return of the rising UFC star.

Today Ellenberger ? born and bred in Omaha and the assistant coach at the University of Nebraska-Omaha ? was presented with the Key to the City by David Dover, Deputy Chief of Staff to Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle. The former US Marine said: "I'm honored to be recognized by the city I grew up in and fight for. It's extra pressure to fight in your hometown with all your family and friends in the front row, but I know the support from the local fans will be awesome."

UFC looks to boost FUEL

The Fox deal was a no brainer for the promotion, but it does come with some early risks by using FUEL as its clearance house for programming.

Spike was in 100 million home. Fuel is still a work-in-progress with only 36 millions. That will get boosted into the mid-40's tonight due to a free preview this week. Unfortunately, like many young networks FUEL is fighting for clearance with cable companies. Comcast, the nation's biggest cable carrier, still doesn't offer the channel. That said, the Fox folks are enthused by the early uptick with the UFC partnership.

"We've had an 80 percent increase in the target demographic of men ages 18-49, and a near 230 percent increase in overall prime-time ratings from past ratings periods," Fuel TV vice president George Greenberg said. "To say I'm jacked would be putting it mildly."

Dillashaw needs a quick bounce back victory

The pre-show favorite for the 135-pound title on Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter," Dillashaw was surprised by the much smaller John Dodson in the final. He was finished on what he thought was a flash knockdown.

The powerful wrestler faces a challenge in the very rangy Walel Watson. He's not impressed.

"He's obviously going to be the tallest bantamweight I'll ever fight. He's got a long reach. Other than that, I don't find him too dangerous. Yeah, he's going to use his reach to his advantage, but he's not dangerous with it. He likes to stay on the outside obviously and use it to his advantage, but I'm not too impressed with his ground game or his [aggression]," Dillashaw told Sherdog.

The key phrase there is aggression. Watson's striking game can be dynamic, but he rarely sits down on his strikes. He is dangerous off his back which makes this fight really interesting since Dillashaw is probably going to look for the takedown and top control. He needs to be consistently active or he could get caught.

UFC Announces New Insurance for Fighters

by Michael David SmithOne of the things that has always separated the UFC from sports leagues like the NFL, NBA and MLB is the lack of insurance for UFC fighters for injuries suffered outside the Octagon. But as the UFC grows, that appears to be changing.

Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce, has announced that its 350 or so fighters, who are all independent contractors, will now be eligible for what it calls "customized accident insurance coverage." The policy will cover not just accidental injuries suffered in training, but also injuries suffered in car accidents or other injuries that have nothing to do with the fighters' MMA careers.

"As this sport continues to grow, we have been working hard to secure additional insurance coverage so that our athletes can perform at the highest levels," UFC President Dana White said in the announcement. "We're proud to give our athletes access to this type of insurance."

Payne: 'We want a change of culture'

With the 2012 season opener just over two weeks away, D.C. United's players and management are finalizing their goals for the upcoming campaign. Foremost is the challenge of ending the four-year drought that has seen the Black-and-Red miss out on the playoffs every year since 2007.

Following the recent announcement of Dwayne De Rosario's new contract, we caught up with Club President & CEO Kevin Payne, who had some candid - and at times harsh - remarks about the change he wants to see in D.C.'s dressing room.

Fighter misses out on UFC debut with ankle issue: Sean Loeffler suffers injury in warm ups

What a bummer for Sean Loeffler. The 29-year-old was set to make his debut at UFC on Fuel TV 1, but apparently injured himself just before the fight.

MMAjunkie reported that Loeffler's opponent Buddy Roberts, also making his debut, was paid his win and show money. Loeffler was also paid his show money. That's a great gesture for two guys who were minutes away from laying it on the line.

Roy Nelson?s excellent adventure includes sleeping in a capsule and, um, feasting on blowfish testicles

Roy Nelson probably didn't need to prove his toughness anymore after he survived the beating he took from Fabricio Werdum in their heavyweight match on Feb. 4 at UFC 143 in Las Vegas. In video from Dana White's video blog, Nelson is seen complaining that he felt he won the fight, which provokes a chuckle from UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

But if you didn't believe in the big man's toughness before, perhaps you will after watching the tour of Japan that he did while in Tokyo for UFC 144, which is Saturday at the Saitama Super Arena.

Nelson went to a Buddhist temple and showed off some strange sleeping quarters, which more closely resembles a dog kennel, at the Asakusa Capsule Hotel.

By far, though, the highlight of the tour is when Nelson & Co. went to a Tokyo restaurant and ate blowfish. Not only did Nelson eat blowfish filet, he also ate blowfish testicles.

It's hard to tell whether or not he likes it, though the odd guttural sound he made after swallowing the blowfish testicles might give away his true feelings.

Bellator Adds Alexis Vila to Bantamweight Division

by Michael David Smith

As it continues to carve out a niche for itself as the No. 2 promotion in mixed martial arts, Bellator has once again signed a fighter who's big on talent and capable of bringing a great deal of excitement into the cage in former Olympic wrestling bronze medalist Alexis Vila.

Before we get into all the reasons Vila is an exciting addition to Bellator's bantamweight tournament, let's get the two big problems out of the way ...
1. He's old: He turned 40 in March.
2. He's tiny: In the Olympics he wrestled at 105 pounds and most recently fought in MMA at 125 pounds.

MMA Top 10 Featherweights: Aldo on Top, Mendes No. 2

by Michael David SmithJose Aldo has now made his UFC debut and won the UFC's first featherweight title fight, an entertaining if not terribly competitive unanimous decision over Mark Hominick at UFC 129. So what does the UFC do with Aldo from here?

The fight I think the UFC really wants to make for Aldo is against Kenny Florian, who has more name recognition than anyone else on the UFC's featherweight roster. If Florian wins his featherweight debut against Diego Nunes at UFC 131, he'll instantly step into title contention -- and into the featherweight Top 10.

But for now, the No. 1 featherweight appears headed toward an August showdown with the undefeated Chad Mendes -- and on my featherweight rankings, that's the right call.

Highlights from UFC on Fuel for those of us who couldn?t watch

Since starting with Yahoo! Sports in September of 2008, I haven't missed a single UFC or Strikeforce event. There were a few I couldn't watch live, but I have DVRed or bought a replay of every pay-per-view, fight night, network event and Showtime show. Not missing any fights over the past three years is exactly what made Wednesday night so weird. I couldn't watch UFC on Fuel 1 because I don't have Fuel, and it's not likely that it will become available to me anytime soon. Did you have a similar experience?

Today, Fuel released highlights for those of us who couldn't watch, starting with Jake Ellenberger and Diego Sanchez's Fight of the Night.

It was painful to miss such a good bout, as well as Stipe Miocic's Knockout of the Night.

The card was started off with Ivan Menjivar's Submission of the Night performance over John Albert.
