George Lucas? daughter wins by submission in Japan

The force was with Amanda Lucas as she won her second MMA bout, a submission over Hikaru Shinohara at DEEP 55 in Japan. Lucas, the daughter of "Star Wars" creator George Lucas, won with an armbar in the first round.

Former Strikeforce fighter Roxanne Modafferi was on hand for the bout, and shared how the fight went down on her blog:

She pretty much creamed Hikaru Shinohara. She mounted her and the Japanese girl could totally not move. Lucas was just hitting her and hitting her over and over, but she didn't put her full body weight into it, so it wasn't doing a lot of damage. Hikaru was defending her jaw area, so the punches bounced off her forehead and temple. That's probably why the Japanese ref, who are notorious for stopping fights early, let it go on. Finally Amanda realized that the fight wasn't gonna get stopped, so she transitioned to a beautiful arm bar. It was FULLY extended, but the Japanese fighter wasn't tapping. Her cornerman threw the towel- rightfully so, but she was so upset that stalked back to her corner and punched him as hard as she could. I'm told that he got a black eye.

That's enough drama for George Lucas to create a whole new series. A cornerman stopping a fight only to be rewarded with a punch? That's worth at least a subplot in his next film.

Amanda was supposed to fight in Oklahoma in April, but her bout was scrapped at the last minute. She has been training at Fairtex, Cesar Gracie Academy and with Gilbert Melendez's Skrap Pack.

Jake Shields Will Remain on UFN 25 Following Father's Death

Jake Shields has decided to go through with his Sept. 17 fight against Jake Ellenberger at UFC Fight Night 25 following the recent death of his father and manager, Jack Shields. MMA Fighting confirmed the fighter's decision with UFC officials.

GracieFighter.com
broke the news of Jack Shields' passing on Tuesday. He was 67 years old.

No word just yet on the cause of death. According to Sherdog.com, Shields died in his sleep on Monday at his Sacramento, Calif., home.

"Lost my father manager and one of my best friends today!! R.I.P jack you will be greatly missed and loved by many," Shields was quoted as saying on the Web site.

Shields served as his son's manager since 2002. Prior to his son's title fight against Georges St-Pierre at UFC 129, Shields spoke to MMA Fighting's Ben Fowlkes about how he ended up working with his son.

"After the ['Mach'] Sakurai fight he didn't get any offers. He upset Sakurai and then two months later he still wasn't in any fights. So he asked me to find him a fight," he said.

"Jake asked me to manage him after that and I said, 'I'm sure there's someone down there who knows the business a lot better than I do. I'm all the way up here in the mountains. There's got to be someone closer to you who knows this business.' Six to eight months later he sent me a contract that somebody wanted him to sign and then I took over. It was terrible. I had to [delete] the whole thing and write a new one."

UFN 25: "Battle at the Bayou" airs live on Spike TV from the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Shields vs. Ellenberger will serve as the card's main event.

UFC on Versus 5 postfight: Lytle wins bonuses, WEC fighters entertain and Hardy keeps his job

MILWAUKEE -- Some notes from the UFC on Versus 5 post-fight press conference:

-- UFC president Dana White announced the bonuses on Twitter before the press conference. Chris Lytle won both Submission of the Night and Fight of the Night, netting him $130,000 and a Harley-Davidson. Dan Hardy picked up $65,000 for his half of the Fight of the Night performance, and Donald Cerrone won $65,000 for his Knockout of the Night of Charles Oliveira.

-- UFC chairman Lorenzo Fertitta tweeted that he has no plans to cut Hardy, despite his four-fight losing skid. He said, "I like guys that WAR."

"It's a nice vote of confidence from the boss. I love being a part of the organization. If they are going to give me one more fight, I need to come back reinvented," Hardy said.

-- Lytle admitted that he was surprised that Hardy shot in on him during the final minutes of the fight. He said it was an instinct to reach for the guillotine.

"He's one of the toughest guys I've been in there with. I threw a lot of hard shots on him and it didn't stop him," Lytle said of Hardy.

-- Ben Henderson doesn't know where he would rank in the very crowded UFC lightweight title picture.

"It's not my place to say I'm no. 7, no. 21. You guys tell me. What does Dana think? What does Sean Shelby think?" Henderson said.

-- Though his job is safe, Dan Hardy plans to give himself some time away from fights to improve.

"I think my head is elsewhere right now. I think I'm going to step away and clear my mind a bit. I had quickest rise and quickest fall in the UFC," Hardy said.

-- Henderson paid tribute to his teammates by getting on his knees and begging UFC brass to take a look at the other fighters in the gym, a completely selfless act for a fighter who could reasonably be using his post-fight speech to ask for a title shot. Henderson was predictably humble when asked about it.

"We're not alone in that cage. We have training partners who bleed with us. They're our brothers. If not for those guys, I wouldn't be where I'm at. Life like a fighter is life like a starving artist, and I just want them to get a shot. I will stand behind them."

-- Jim Miller had questioned the readiness of WEC fighters when the UFC first merged with the organization. Donald Cerrone and Henderson, both WEC vets, smiled at that fact.

"I think the little brothers just beat up the big brothers!" Cerrone said.

Former UFC heavyweights Rodriguez, Gormley, McCorkle and Sylvia post mixed results

If you think the UFC and Strikeforce have trouble finding heavyweight depth beyond their top 10, imagine what it's like around the rest of the world. This weekend's smaller promotion fight slate gives us a good read.

Tim Sylvia, Chase Gormley, Ricco Rodriguez and Sean McCorkle were all in action. They didn't fight world beaters and the group still barely managed a split.

Rodriguez got a wake up call at Bellator 48. A UFC heavyweight champ way back in 2002, the 229-pound Rodriguez still needs to make the final cut to 205. He was overwhelmed and overpowered by Seth Petruzelli. Petruzelli, another UFC vet and an "The Ultimate Fighter" alum, shredded Rodriguez on the feet. The 34-year-old looked gassed towards the end of the first, ate a few kicks and then charged right into an overhand right. He went down like a ton of bricks and Petruzelli, a true light heavyweight, dropped a couple of hammer fists to finish the fight. Petruzelli posted win No. 14 of his career at the 4:21 mark of the first.

It was even worse for Gormley, who lost at a local Las Vegas show, Superior Cage Combat. The 6-foot-3, 275 pounder fought someone named Beau Tribolet. Tribolet (7-1) was called in on two days notice and knocked Gormley silly in less than three minutes. Gormley (7-4) was 0-2 with the UFC losing to Stefan Struve (UFC 104) and Brendan Schaub (UFC on Versus 1). Tribolet, a former power lifter, is a police officer in Tucson, Az.

In Illinois, Sylvia, the UFC heavyweight champ on two occasions, smashed Patrick Barrentine. Barrentine (9-6) hadn't fought in two years. Sylvia (28-7) has won 5-of-6, but is still trying to erase the memory of three one-sided losses in the last three years against Fedor Emelianenko, Ray Mercer and Abe Wagner.

McCorkle's fight may have been the oddest of the bunch. McCorkle (12-2) defeated Alex Rozman, who has a 3-13 record. McCorkle was 1-2 with the UFC. He was released after a loss to Christian Morecraft.

Henderson jumps back into title mix with win over Miller

Jim Miller needed a resounding victory to finally get his shot at the UFC lightweight title. Ben Henderson wasn't interested in being a stepping stone.

The former WEC 155-pound champ wanted back into the mix too, so he battered and bloodied Miller on his way to a unanimous decision victory, 30-27, 29-28 and 30-26 on the scorecards, at UFC on Versus 5 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Miller, who entered the fight riding a seven-fight win streak, was a minus-160 favorite. Henderson (14-2, 2-0 UFC) was fighting for respect. He'll get a lot more than just respect with this performance. He dominated a guy who's only previous losses came against Gray Maynard and Frank Edgar, the No. 1 and 2 lightweights in world.

The lightweight division is easily the deepest in mixed martial arts and new contenders keep emerging because no one can hold on to the No. 1 contender spot.

While UFC champ Edgar and Maynard have been sidelined with injuries since their January fight at UFC 125, there's been numerous chances for folks to step up and grab the next title shot. Almost everyone has failed in their big spot. George Sotiropoulos and Anthony Pettis both fell short earlier this year and Miller (20-3, 9-2 UFC) was the latest.

Miller's gameplan backfired against Henderson. The
WEC 155-pound champ has a reputation for allowing himself to get into bad submission predicaments, but "Smooth" has always been able to escape from those dangerous situations. Miller seemed to assume that Henderson wouldn't do so against him, so he tried submission after submission in the opening eight minutes of the fight. But in doing so, he left himself open to get beat on. With both hands working for subs, there's nothing to protect you from knees, elbows and punches. Henderson took advantage and blasted away.

By the end of the second round, Miller was bleeding like a stuck pig. In the final minute of the fight, with blood stinging his eyes and wincing in pain, Miller could barely open his eyes.

According to FightMetric, over the final two rounds Henderson outlanded Miller 91-16 . Henderson was also 7-for-7 on his takedown attempts. The numbers said Miller officially attempted six submissions, it looked more like 10.

UFC reportedly has deal with FOX; Network has big press conference announcement set for Thursday

The rumor merry-go-round continues to twirl with regards to the UFC and a new television deal.

First it was the Wall Street Journal reporting that Zuffa (parent company to the UFC) was closing in on a deal with Comcast/NBC. Now Sport Business Daily says FOX has stepped up to grab the mixed martial arts giant in a package that could be worth as much as $90 million per year.

In what would represent a major push into the mainstream for the UFC, Fox has agreed to a deal that will see the broadcast channel air as many as four MMA events per year, according to several sources. The multiyear deal would mark the first time the UFC will have consistent airtime on a broadcast network. Fox execs refused to comment on the deal, but sources with knowledge of the negotiations said bidding had gone as high as $90M per year. The Fox deal is believed to be for seven or eight years.

UPDATE: John Ourand from SBJ tweeted that FOX has a major announcement on the way later this week.

UFC president Dana White wouldn't confirm the deal to MMAjunkie.

"You guys will know when we have a TV deal," said White.

White appeared with Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole on Friday's "MMA Insiders" on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas.

"We do not have a deal. We're out there talking to everybody. When you're out there talking to everybody there's going to be lots of rumors," White said (19:10 mark). "In a perfect world, what would really work out great is if you could be on CBS and FOX and Comcast/NBC. Just like the NFL is. That would be the perfect world, but this sport has a lot of room to grow."

White has been very selective over the years with the UFC's programming partners.

"I will not do a dumb deal. We're not going to do a deal that doesn't make sense. We could've been the first mixed martial arts on network television, but none of the deals made sense," White said. "And as you saw all those guys [that were on network TV like EliteXC on CBS] ended up going out of business."

The UFC has been looking for a multi-platform deal. The promotion would like programming on network TV and several cable channels. Currently, it's running live fights and additional programming with preview shows and past fights on Spike and Versus. That will change in a deal with FOX.

As part of the deal, most of the weekly programming that UFC has on Versus and Spike TV will move to FX starting in January. That includes several fight cards, plus shows like the reality series "The Ultimate Fighter." Fox-owned Fuel also will wind up with some UFC content. But rumors that Fox will rebrand Fuel as a UFC channel are not true, sources said. Fox was attracted to UFC programming, which has produced some of the highest viewership figures -- and most attractive demos -- on Versus and Spike TV.

According to SBJ, Viacom-owned Spike dropped out of the bidding because of lagging numbers:

The UFC's talks with Viacom-owned Spike ended before that. Sources said Spike ultimately passed over concern that its UFC shoulder programming stopped growing. Shows like "Unleashed," "Knockouts" and "Countdown" averaged 1 million viewers in '05. This year, they are averaging 492,000. Spike holds the rights to UFC library programming through '12, including old fights and shoulder programming such as "UFC Unleashed."

The most recent live event on Versus actually trended up at UFC on Versus 5.

UFC's Sunday night eventin Milwaukee on Versus also drew 766,000 viewers from 9:00-11:09pm ET, marking the net's most-viewed program for the week ending August 14. That figure is up 3% from 744,000 viewers for the last UFC event on Versus on June 26.

FOX deal with the UFC announced tomorrow? Report says GSP, Evans and Edgar all headed to L.A.

All signs point to something big going down in Los Angeles tomorrow. FOX has announced a major press conference set for 1 p.m. PT in Los Angeles. Is FOX revealing a new deal with the UFC?

Sports Business Journal broke a story on Tuesday stating FOX won the sweepstakes to lock up the UFC for the next 7-8 years.

UFC president Dana White is already in Los Angeles and MMAWeekly reports that some of the promotion's biggest stars are heading to the Golden State as well:

[...] names including UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and current top light heavyweight contender Rashad Evans.

If you're a longtime fan of mixed martial arts, the potential deal that would place the UFC on several FOX-owned channels, has to get the juices flowing. The sport has come a long way.

Bloody Elbow is covering the potential deal from every angle.-

- Will the UFC's decision-making be altered?

- What could FOX deal do for the future of MMA?

Video roundup: White, GSP and Rashad on new FOX deal

Dana White was downright giddy when he did some one-on-one's following the announcement that UFC has locked up a deal with FOX. He has every right to be especially about what's on the way for the "Ultimate Fighter." It feels line a re-birth for the show.

"When it comes to ratings going down [on Spike] ... John Landgraf (head of FX), this guy is a genius when it comes to television, one of the things that he said and it's true, is we weren't being promoted," White told MMAHeat's Karyn Bryant. "And if you look at the numbers we pulled with no promotion, wait 'til you see what we pull when we're being promoted."

White is happy for the company, but he's also excited for what network TV will bring for the competitors in the sport.

"This is a long time coming," White said. "[...] The sport and the athletes will finally get he credit, and the respect that they deserve from the mainstream press."

Georges St-Pierre and Rashad Evans also spoke to Bryant.

Reagan Penn Wins Debut in 70 Seconds, Arlovski Gets First Win in Three Years

In his first time in the MMA cage, Reagan Penn proved as much a phenom as his brother.

Penn, the younger brother of current UFC welterweight contender BJ Penn, won his professional mixed martial arts debut, defeating Paul Gardiner via rear naked choke in just 70 seconds at a ProElite show in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Gardiner came out strong, surprising Penn with a takedown. Penn looked for a guillotine, then quickly scrambled to take Gardiner's back, where he choked him out without even fully sinking his hooks in.

Gardiner had been 1-0 in his pro career, winning his April debut fight via first-round TKO.

"I did what I wanted to do," said a smiling Penn, who may have gotten the biggest ovation of the night from the crowd in his home state. Prior to the event, the 30-year-old Penn said he would take his career on a fight-by-fight basis, but the welterweight gave no indication afterward if he planned to compete again.

Andrei Arlovski also emerged victorious on the card, winning for the first time since October 2008 with a third-round TKO over Ray Lopez. Arlovski (16-9) controlled the fight for much of the duration but had trouble finishing the durable Lopez.

Finally, midway through the third, he rocked Lopez with strikes from the top, and continued the hail of punches until the ref pulled him off. Arlovski had lost four straight prior to that.

Despite the fact that the event was called ProElite: Arlvoski vs. Lopez, the show finished with Kendall Grove vs. Joe Riggs in the main event slot, and Grove needed less than one minute to defeat Riggs, forcing him to tap to a standing guillotine choke.

Grove moved to 13-9 with one no decision.

In the other main card fights, Mark Ellis defeated Jake Heun via second-round rear naked choke, Drew McFedries uses strikes to force a second-round TKO over Garret Olson, and promising female star Sara McMann stayed unbeaten, moving to 4-0 with a third-round TKO over Raquel Pa'aluhi.

MMA Marketplace: A non-eye-searing MMA shirt

Ben Fowlkes from MMA Fighting assisted Cagewriter in our ongoing campaign to find MMA apparel that does not involve, gargoyles, angel wings, fire, feathers, illegible text or gold foil accents. He passed on this shirt from Commit Threads, a company that works with independent designers on limited edition shirts.

This image depicts an act that goes on thousands of times every day at dojos, gyms and training centers worldwide: A fighter wrapping his hands. It's so simple, but instantly identifiable with fighting. Buy the limited-edition shirt for just $20.

Do you have a suggestion for MMA Marketplace? Use email, Twitter or Facebook to send it in.

Day 4 On the River ? July 29th 2011

Sonnen exclusive: Silva?s going down against Okami at UFC 134

Anderson Silva is clearly the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. When healthy and interested, he's destroyed every UFC opponent put in front of him. but Chael Sonnen sees an opening for Yushin Okami against the middleweight champ and thinks the Japanese star is leaving UFC 134 with the title strap.

"[Silva]'s lost to Okami once before. This is a rematch and Yushin already beat him once," said Sonnen speaking of a 2006 match up at 170 pounds where Okami picked up a win via disqualification because Silva delivered an illegal upkick. "Yushin is a lot better now, so I can't imagine how he wouldn't beat him again."

Sonnen says Silva has ducked opponents who play to his weakness, takedown defense. He went as far as saying the fight against Okami won't even be competitive. Sonnen's entitled to his opinion. After all, he's the guy who beat Silva for four and a half rounds at UFC 117 before getting caught in a late submission.

Sonnen also told a story about Vitor Belfort on "The MMA Insiders" show in Las Vegas on ESPNRadio1100/98.9 FM. He was so bullish on Belfort's chances against Silva at UFC 126 that plunked down a little money on the underdog. He said all hopes ended when he saw Belfort at the weigh-in. He says Belfort backed down to Silva's attempts of intimidation. After that, Sonnen ripped up his ticket.

Listen here for the entire "MMA Insiders" show. Co-host Kevin Iole was joined by FX's John Landgraf and Sonnen.

Don?t worry. After Tunnel Chute, the fun is definitely not over on the Middle Fork American. UFC on Versus 5: Miller ready to prove he?s among the best lightweights

MILWAUKEE -- You can count on Jim Miller to always bring some good facial hair. At today's open workouts for UFC on Versus 5, a red mustache and pointy goatee sprouted from his face. He explained that it's all for the children.

"I'm having a little boy in September, and his name is going to be Wyatt, so I wanted to greet him with the nice Wyatt Earp curled mustache. With my daughter, I grew a nice thick protest beard, once she was born, I shaved it into a celebration mustache," Earp Miller said. (He assured Cagewriter that the protest was just because he was jealous that his wife got to hold the baby throughout the pregnancy, and the celebration was for when his daughter was born.)

You can also count on Miller to win. He has strung together seven straight victories, but still finds himself just short of a title shot in the stacked lightweight division. That doesn't seem to bother him as he prepares for his bout with Ben Henderson.

"It's pretty easy, because I'm here to fight the best, and I know I can beat anybody in the world. The way the title picture has worked out, you can't expect anything. You gotta wait it out and let these guys settle it. And I've been training my butt off so I can beat them."

Miller has been patient about waiting for the title shot, not complaining publicly about how he is often forgotten among the best lightweights. He happily takes the fights assigned to him, but lately has become more confident in speaking out on his own behalf.

He claims it's not an attitude change, but an increase in comfort around media.

"I've pretty much had the same attitude. I knew I could hang with these guys. I feel great, I feel sharp, I'm learning new things every day. It's more just getting comfortable with the mike in my face. It comes out a lot easier than it did three years ago.:

Milwaukee?s best: Dan Hardy, baseball and bratwurst

MILWAUKEE -- What happens when a mohawked Brit goes to a baseball game in America? Hooliganism of the worst kind, of course!

OK, not at all. While waiting for his UFC on Versus 5 bout against Chris Lytle, Dan Hardy took in a game at Miller Park. Behind ace Zack Greinke and home runs from Ryan Braund and Prince Fielder, the Brewers easily beat the Pirates. But Hardy saw much more than the game. It's Milwaukee, so there was food and fans and sausage races!

It's a little disappointing that Hardy didn't dance when put on the jumbotron.

UFC fighters Pat Barry and Anthony Pettis also dropped by for some baseball and brats.

As usual, the crowd was fired up for the sausage race. Don't act like you wouldn't be, too.

Hardy talked to and signed autographs for Brewers fans. Don't worry, Hardy fans. Those aren't his empty beer cans. See more pictures from the evening here.

Dana White Talks UFC 134 Storylines, First FOX Event

RIO DE JANEIRO -- MMA Fighting spoke to UFC president Dana White on Thursday about putting on his first event in Brazil, Anderson Silva's growing popularity in his home country, the main event for the UFC's first FOX telecast, Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera's health going into Saturday night and much more.

Hardy misses, then makes weight at UFC on Versus 5 weigh-ins

MILWAUKEE -- Dan Hardy, one of the main eventers for Sunday night's UFC on Versus 5 card, missed weight by a half-pound on his first try during weigh-ins outside the Harley Davidson Museum. He made weight an hour later.

The rest of the fighters made weight:

MAIN CARD (Versus)
? Dan Hardy (171.5)* vs. Chris Lytle (170.5)
? Ben Henderson (156) vs. Jim Miller (155.5)
? Donald Cerrone (156) vs. Charles Oliveira (155)
? Duane Ludwig (170.5) vs. Amir Sadollah (170)

PRELIMINARY CARD (Facebook)
? C.B. Dollaway (186) vs. Jared Hamman (185)
? Joseph Benavidez (135.5) vs. Eddie Wineland (136)
? Ed Herman (186) vs. Kyle Noke (185)
? Ronny Markes (205) vs. Karlos Vemola (205.5)
? Alex Caceres (146) vs. Jim Hettes (145.5)
? Cole Miller (155) vs. T.J. O'Brien (155.5)
? Danny Castillo (156) vs. Jacob Volkmann (156)
? Edwin Figueroa (136) vs. Jason Reinhardt (135)
* - Missed weight on first attempt

Other notes from the weigh-in:

-- T.J. O'Brien and Cole Miller got in each other's face and jawed, continuing even as Miller walked off the stage. UFC president Dana White told the two to save it for tomorrow night.

-- Charles Oliveira and Donald Cerrone also appeared to engage in smack talk while facing off, which is interesting considering that Oliveira speaks Portugese and Cerrone speaks English.

-- Jacob Volkmann started his campaign today, wearing a "Volkmann for President" shirt. I wonder what the Secret Service will have to say about that.

-- Several fighters tried to earn the award for best weigh-in wear. Eddie Wineland wore underwear that resembled denim shorts for a Tobias Bluth Funke look, while Amir Sadollah wore brightly colored shorts that caused UFC commentator to quip, "I hope no one is on acid out there." [Ed. note -- an earlier version messed up the joke on one of my favorite shows of all time. All apologies.]

Thanks to MMA Junkie for results, and Combat Lifestyle for pictures.

Jamie Varner to Main Event Titan FC 20 on HDNet

Jamie Varner punches Donald Cerrone in a WEC fight.Former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner will be back on television for the Sept. 23 Titan FC 20 card at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas, promoters announced Wednesday.

Varner will share headlining duties in a showdown against Bellator veteran Alonzo Martinez. The other bout official for the HDNet card is a bantamweight tilt between Anthony Guiterrez (3-0) and Laramie Schaffer (4-2).

After failing to make the UFC roster following the UFC-WEC merger, Varner (17-5-1) contemplated retirement but ultimately decided to continue fighting while at the same time studying at Seton Hall to become a physician's assistant. Varner also left Arizona Combat Sports for better sparring partners at the AMA Fight Club in New Jersey, where he began training under Mike Constantino with the Miller brothers, Charlie Brenneman and others. In May, Varner returned to the local level and scored a first-round technical submission win over Tyler Combs at XFO 30 in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Martinez (31-14-1) went 1-1 as a member of the inaugural season of Bellator in 2009, losing to Toby Imada and then beating Victor Menza. Martinez is on quite the win streak, compiling four straight wins and walking out with his arm raised nine of his last 10 appearances.
